Mattawan Consolidated Schools

The design of the two new elementary schools accommodates the 21st century learning needs of students and staff.

It features learning spaces that encourage interaction, support community, and evolve with educational standards. The connected buildings each have three state-of-the-art classroom wings. The wings are efficiently organized along single thruways that minimizes student travel time during the day. Each wing houses a different grade level. A noticeable difference in the school is the absence of lockers and hallways. These have been removed to open space for collaborative learning commons. These adaptable learning spaces support any type of learning.

The abundance of windows provides indoor/outdoor connectivity and daylight harvesting. Natural light is shown to have positive health effects, aid in learning, and reduce dependence on artificial lighting. Lighting fixtures are all LED for increased performance. For building and energy efficiency the new school will share services with the adjacent Early Elementary. Shared spaces include a kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, mechanical & electrical plant, and a corridor connection for students and staff.
