Kentwood Public Schools – Hamilton Elementary and Early Childhood Center

With goals to provide equity between their 11 neighborhood elementary schools, Kentwood Public Schools set their sights on Hamilton Elementary and Early Childhood Center. Having seen few upgrades since its introduction over 60 years ago, enrollment was declining. In order to reinvigorate the school, the following renovations and additions were made:

  • A new collaboration space, located in the old media center and admin offices, consists of entirely furnishings, storytelling area and visible private small group spaces
  • New Early Childhood Center with separate entrance and playground
  • Re-branding of the building with a newly freshened façade, including a secure entry vestibule, introduction of light in student-occupied spaces, and a new mechanical system with air conditioning, LED lighting, and technology throughout school
  • Redesigned courtyard that is low-maintenance and suitable for instruction
  • New cafeteria and full-service kitchen with easy access to protected play space
  • Newly designed playgrounds with opportunities for all students
  • Renovated gymnasium with the introduction of natural light from clerestory windows and borrowed lights
