There are few moments more rewarding than watching a school community walk through the doors of a transformed building for the very first time.
Last week, Kentwood Public Schools celebrated the ribbon cutting for the newly reimagined Hamilton Elementary School, a milestone that represents far more than a completed construction project. It marks the beginning of a new chapter for students, staff, and families who now have spaces designed to inspire learning, foster connection, and support every child who enters the building.
For our team, projects like Hamilton Elementary are deeply meaningful because they embody our vision of Creating Places People Love. Seeing students explore bright new learning spaces, hearing excitement echo through the hallways, and watching educators imagine new possibilities for teaching and collaboration is a powerful reminder of why we do this work.
Originally built more than 60 years ago, Hamilton Elementary had seen few major updates over the decades. Together with Kentwood Public Schools, we set out to create an environment that would not only meet the needs of today’s learners, but also restore pride and energy within the school community.
The transformation touches nearly every part of the building. A new collaboration space now serves as the heart of the school - flexible, welcoming, and designed to support creativity, storytelling, small-group learning, and connection. Natural light floods the renovated gymnasium and learning spaces through new windows and clerestory glazing, creating brighter and more uplifting environments for students and staff.
The refreshed facade and secure entry vestibule enhance safety measures while creating a warm and welcoming first impression, while upgraded systems including air conditioning, LED lighting, and enhanced technology improve comfort and functionality throughout the building.
Beyond the classroom walls, the redesigned outdoor spaces provide opportunities for both play and learning. New playgrounds include accessible features, open green spaces, and a transformed courtyard that give students places to explore, gather, and grow together. The new cafeteria and full-service kitchen further support the daily experience of students and staff while strengthening connections between indoor and outdoor activity spaces.
What makes this project especially impactful is the role it plays in Kentwood Public Schools’ larger vision of equity across its 11 neighborhood elementary schools. Every student deserves to feel valued, inspired, and supported by the environment where they learn each day, and Hamilton Elementary now reflects that commitment in every detail.
As designers, it is incredibly rewarding to see years of planning, collaboration, and hard work come to life in ways that truly impact people. Spaces like Hamilton Elementary have the power to shape experiences, strengthen communities, and change lives for generations of students to come.
We are grateful to Kentwood Public Schools for trusting us to be part of this journey and proud to celebrate this exciting new beginning alongside the Hamilton Elementary community.
