Designing for Real-World Learning: Genesee ISD’s New Fire Training Center

Genesee Intermediate School District's fire training facility – the first in Michigan

At Kingscott, we believe great design starts with understanding – of people, purpose, and possibility. That belief guided our work with the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) to create Michigan’s first fire training facility not owned by a municipality, a place where students can prepare for meaningful careers in public safety.

Located on the campus of the Genesee Career Institute (GCI) in Mundy Township, the new Fire Training Center was designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world experience. The facility includes dedicated spaces for live fire simulations, roof rescues, and equipment training – giving students hands-on opportunities to practice the skills they’ll need in the field, all within a safe, controlled environment.

From the start, GISD’s vision was clear: create a facility that inspires students to serve their communities with confidence and purpose. Working closely with district leaders and career-technical educators, our design team translated that vision into a space that feels authentic, functional, and empowering.

“This new Fire Training Center will inspire more students to pursue firefighting and public safety careers,” shared Diana Allard, Executive Director of Career and Technical Education for GISD. “It’s about giving students the opportunity to serve their communities with skill, courage, and purpose.”

The center also doubles the capacity of GCI’s firefighting and first responder programs, expanding opportunities for students across Genesee County to explore careers that make a difference.

For our team at Kingscott, this project reflects more than just thoughtful design – it’s about creating environments that prepare students for life beyond graduation. It’s about designing with purpose, in partnership with educators who understand that hands-on experience builds both skill and character.

At its core, the new Fire Training Center embodies what we strive for in every project: creating places you love – and in this case, places that prepare students to protect and serve the communities they call home.
