Innovation Central High School Receives Historic Preservation Award

Innovation Central High School awarded “Most Outstanding Preservation Project by a Group” by the Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission

Kingscott is proud to announce that Innovation Central High School has been recognized with the “Most Outstanding Preservation Project by a Group” award by the Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission.

Kingscott served as the architect for this project in partnership with Grand Rapids Public Schools, leading the restoration of the building’s historic 1911 exterior while supporting modern educational needs. The work included extensive masonry repairs and the installation of 400 larger, historically styled windows, carefully designed to honor the original architecture while increasing natural daylight in classrooms.

In addition to exterior restoration, the project included significant interior and systems improvements. Upgrades encompassed a complete roof replacement, renovated restrooms, and a full HVAC system upgrade with added cooling. Science classrooms were comprehensively renovated to better support contemporary instruction, and the main office was relocated to create a new secure entry that enhances safety for students and staff. The historic auditorium was also remodeled and restored to improve functionality while preserving its character.

This recognition reflects a shared commitment to preserving Grand Rapids’ architectural heritage while adapting historic school facilities to meet the evolving needs of today’s learners.

Kingscott is honored to support the continued legacy of Innovation Central High School and to partner on projects that thoughtfully balance historic preservation with modern learning environments.
